Meet Our Accessibility Senior Consultant

Alexis Chicoine is a disability diversity and inclusion consultant, speaker and writer. With over twenty years of experience, she believes in open, authentic conversations and is on a mission to help local governments and organizations like yours to become disability-confident and more inclusive in their hiring and retention practices and in the built environment.

Her Story

A university graduate with a BSc in Nutritional Sciences and a postgraduate diploma in Disability Management, Alexis has an entrepreneurial spirit like none other. Her journey, though, has been a challenging one that few have experienced. On vacation (her honeymoon) in Venezuela, she was in a car accident that changed the course of her life when she was thirty years old.

The tour driver missed a corner in a mountainous off-road area causing the SUV to roll down the mountainside. Somehow Alexis was thrown from the vehicle and broke her neck at C6/7, along with a few other bones. She became a quadriplegic in that moment.

This life-altering accident was not and is not always easy to live with for Alexis and those close to her. Some could not handle it, her husband included, and they exited her life.

Over time Alexis learned not to look backwards. A line from a motivational speaker she saw soon after the injury stuck with her: “It’s not what happens to you; it’s what you do with it.” And she still lives by that statement today.
